Hazardous Waste Disposal Options for East Contra Costa County Residents
THE PRESS April 27, 2017
With spring finally blooming, it is a perfect time for East Contra Costa County residents to safely dispose of unwanted or expired hazardous wastes in their homes, clean out their garages of toxic waste, change pool chemicals, dispose of last year’s garden pesticides and recycle any unused electronic waste, or e-waste.
For safety and environmental reasons, it is illegal to dispose of household hazardous waste in the garbage, sewers or storm drains. Improper disposal of hazardous products in the community damages local watersheds and the precious Delta ecosystem. From 2015 through 2016, the facility collected 516 tons of hazardous waste.
The following are tips for transporting your household hazardous waste: do not mix materials, keep items in their original containers, pack waste in a sturdy box or tub with newspaper and transport a maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds.
The Delta Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility is made possible through a joint effort between Delta Diablo, the cities of Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg and Contra Costa County. It is located at 2550 Pittsburg-Antioch Highway in Pittsburg and is open Thursday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
